There are a lot of factors that goes into writing. In this post we will talk about formatting. Think about if you had to read a document that has a lot of different fonts, words are all over the page, different colors throughout the document, and what I call SHOUTY caps how would you fell reading it?

How to not overwhelm the reader:

  • Write what they need to know. Do not add fluff.

  • We do put in the oxford comma to help with clarity.

  • Use bullets and white space.

  • Make more shorter sentences then long run on sentences.

  • DO NOT USE SHOUTY CAPS. Instead, if you need the reader to see an important item, bold that word or sentence.

  • Underlining or italics are distracting and can be hard to read. When typing professionally for a journal article for instance, you may be required to use them in citing sources.

  • A 12-font Serif font are the easiest to read for the majority of the population.

These are some of the ways, we at Simply Stated, format our writing to make the reading experience clear and easy to read. In upcoming blogs, we can look at research articles regarding writing for clarity.
